Niche Your Message

Have you noticed how very few people pay attention when you are talking? People do not seem to listen anymore, or at least not after the first 30 seconds or so. We are living in a sound-byte culture created by the media, and we have to adapt our business style to be successful. Here is an exercise:

Have each person on your staff write in not more than 2 paragraphs a summary of exactly what your firm does. Include all important information. Now, combine everyone’s information into one paragraph. Then, boil that one paragraph down to one or two sentences. That is your sound byte. At cocktail parties, events, etc, when someone asks “what do you do, or where do your work”, you have your sound byte ready. It is short, concise, accurate and will get your message across within the 30 second window of opportunity!
