The New Normal?

May 12, 2010

I have had the chance to visit with and speak to designers in 10 cities across America so far this year.  In Las Vegas, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, Boston, Washington DC, Fort Lauderdale, Cleveland, Chicago and Atlanta, there are positive signs of life and there is exciting rebirth going on in their respective design communities.  However, equally, the majority of the designers are still suffering with less business than they would like.

I hate to say it, but part of the difference between the busy and the less busy is in their willingness to take a few risks and try new things.  Most designers who are now busy again changed their business or their approach to business, be it fee structure, service portfolio, marketing strategy, or something equally important.  Some also rekindled old clients and fanned the flames on existing ones.  However, they all DID SOMETHING!

There is business out there now.  It may be different.  It may be more difficult.  But there is business.  It is certainly not always business as usual any more.  But, it is business, and possibly this is the NEW NORMAL.  We will have to wait and see.  I guess all I can suggest is- do something new, try something a bit different, go for it.  Why not?  Try some of the many suggestions from other designers that are contained in this blog.  I was just with a designer who is in every silent auction in town- that is an idea mentioned on this blog, and it works!  Donating yourself is strategic as well as a chance to pay forward.

Good luck.  Be well.
